Steen Eiler Rasmussen
Steen Eiler Rasmussen (born February 19, 1898 in Copenhagen ; † June 19, 1990 there ) was a Danish architect , urban planner , writer and university lecturer .
Life
After finishing school, Rasmussen first did an apprenticeship as a bricklayer before he began studying architecture at the Royal Danish Academy of Art in 1916 , which he graduated in 1918. In 1919 he founded his architecture office. In the same year he won two competitions for his urban planning work for Ringsted and Hirtshals . From 1922 to 1934 and 1938 he was a member of the twelve-member council of the art academy. From 1924 he was a representative of the academy in the Dansk Byplanlaboratorium , the Danish urban planning laboratory , and was a member of this as deputy and chairman until 1948.
Rasmussen was married from 1934 until his wife's death in 1985. Their daughter is the linguist Una Canger . He was a close friend of the writer Karen Blixen .
Professional career
From 1924 Rasmussen was a lecturer in urban planning at the academy, and from 1938 to 1968 he was professor of architecture at the academy. One of his students was Jørn Utzon , the architect of the Sydney Opera House . From 1946 to 1949 and then again in 1954/55 he was dean of the Academy's architecture school. From 1932 to 1938 he worked in the city planning department of the Copenhagen Building Department.

- Participation in the planning for the city of Tingbjerg , in København NV, 6 km northwest of central Copenhagen.

- Ringsted Town Hall , awarded in 1933 and 1935, executed in 1995.

- 1938: His own house in Hørsholm.
- 1960: Renovation of Rungstedholm , the home of Karen Blixen , now the Karen Blixen Museum (Rungsted Kyst)
Prizes and awards
- 1947: Honorary title Royal Designer for Industry from the Society for the Encouragement of Art, Manufactures and Commerce in London
- 1973: Heinrich Tessenow Medal
- 1977: CF Hansen Medal
- Honorary doctorate from the Technical University of Munich
- Member of the Bavarian Academy of Scientists
