Stefan Engel (born March 7, 1954 in Neustadt bei Coburg ) is a German politician and former party leader of the Marxist-Leninist Party of Germany (MLPD).

Life

Engel grew up in Neustadt near Coburg. After attending elementary school and secondary school , he completed vocational training as a locksmith . Engel was chairman of the MLPD from the founding of the party in June 1982 to the 10th party congress in 2017. He heads the editorial department of the party organ Revolutionary Way and works as an author.

In 1999 he married Monika Gärtner. She is a member of the central committee of the MLPD and co-founder of the women's association Courage . Gardener-Engel brought three daughters into the marriage. In 2007 they separated.

politics

Initially, Engel was a member of the Revolutionary Youth Marxist-Leninists RJ / ML , a forerunner organization of the Revolutionary Youth Association of Germany RJVD . In 1975 he was elected to the executive committee of the RJVD, from 1977 to 1979 he was its political director. Engel has been a member of the German Communist Workers' Union (KABD), a predecessor organization of the MLPD, since 1975, and a member of the central management of the KABD since 1978. Since the founding of the MLPD in July 1982, Engel was its chairman until he was replaced by his stepdaughter Gabi Fechtner (née Engel) on April 1, 2017 by resolution of the 10th party congress .

Engel has been a union member since 1974, now in Verdi . He was expelled from IG Metall , to which Engel had been a member since 1974, because of existing trade union incompatibility resolutions that declared simultaneous membership in IG Metall and the MLPD to be inadmissible. His action directed against this was ultimately dismissed by the Federal Court of Justice in October 1990 (AZ: II ZR 255/89).

The State Office for the Protection of the Constitution of North Rhine-Westphalia , in his Verfassungsschutzbericht 2003 on Engels role as leader of the MLPD of " leader cult ".

Since October 6, 2010, Engel has been the main coordinator of the International Coordination of Revolutionary Parties and Organizations . Since the beginning of 2016, he has been gradually replaced by Monika Gärtner-Engel for health reasons .

In July 2012, Engel and the MLPD sued the Essen regional court against the publisher Ferdinand Schöningh and against the authors of the book Left Extremist - Germany's Underestimated Danger? , Harald Bergsdorf and Rudolf van Hüllen . The action for injunctive relief was directed against passages in the book. The Essen Regional Court ruled on April 11, 2013 that the statements that the MLPD had a massive personality cult reminiscent of Stalin and that the party was undergoing constant and periodic purges , should be omitted as unproven factual assertions. All other statements criticized by the MLPD, on the other hand, are permissible expressions of opinion protected by the Basic Law . These said that the MLPD was a sect dressed in party form, that Maoist brainwashing was being carried out, that submission to the party's claim to leadership was required and that intellectuals were rather unwelcome in this party. The MLPD had to bear 51.4% and Engel 32.4% of the legal costs. After this verdict , the publisher stopped selling the printed copies and only sells a revised e-book version.
