Harald Bergsdorf (* 1966 in Bonn ) is a German political scientist specializing in extremism research .

Life

Harald Bergsdorf is the son of political scientist Wolfgang Bergsdorf .

From 1988 to 1992 he studied Political Science , Modern History and Romance / Italian Studies at the Rheinische Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universität Bonn , the Albert-Ludwigs-Universität Freiburg and in 1993 with a DAAD scholarship at the Sorbonne in Paris. From 1994 to 1998 he was a research assistant in the German Bundestag . In 2000 he was at Wolfgang Jäger at the University of Freiburg with the political science dissertation Unequal siblings. The German Republicans (REP) compared to the French Front National (FN) for Dr. phil. PhD .

Bergsdorf, a member of the CDU , was a speaker in the Thuringian Ministry of the Interior in Erfurt until 2005 and then a keynote speaker for the CDU parliamentary group in the state parliament of North Rhine-Westphalia in Düsseldorf. Subsequently, until 2011 he was head of the “State Coordination Office against Right-Wing Extremism” in the State Center for Civic Education North Rhine-Westphalia in Düsseldorf.

He was also a lecturer in political science at the Friedrich Schiller University Jena (2005) and the Rheinische Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universität Bonn (2007). His publications focus on right-wing and left-wing extremist parties. He published several books (including one with Rudolf van Hüllen ), articles and essays, etc. a. in the magazine for politics , in the magazine for parliamentary questions , in the magazine totalitarianism and democracy and in the yearbook extremism & democracy .

Work and reception

Astrid Geisler remarked in the taz about Bergsdorf's 2007 book Die neue NPD. Anti-democrats on the rise , it is “lean” and “thin”. It is also regrettable that the extremism researcher ignores the results of a study by the Friedrich Ebert Foundation , according to which "most Germans with a right-wing extremist view of the world by far [...] still voted CDU / CSU or SPD". For Sebastian Rehse, however, Bergsdorf endeavors to achieve “conceptual clarity” in his criticism in the magazine for parliamentary questions. He made a conscious attempt to “grasp the term extremism free from ideological blow”. Bergsdorf also distinguishes between “extremism and populism”. He offers a “general introduction” for the “academic audience” into the subject and convinces with a “calm and analytical way”. However, there is a lack of justification for the content. Unfortunately, the impression arises as if the "attempt at a short but thematically [..] all-encompassing all-round approach" had been undertaken.

In 2008 Bergsdorf published Die neue Linke. Party between continuity and change of course . Johannes Mehlitz, who reviewed the book in the Zeitschrift für Politik , described it as a “compact, easy-to-read analysis of the” party. It is suitable for both scientists and laypeople. Bergsdorf approaches the matter with a "distanced view". The book helps "to remedy an information deficit and to counteract a distorted public perception in a targeted manner". Jacqueline Boysen, on the other hand, pointed out on Deutschlandfunk that the author, although he was also a "keynote speaker in the parliamentary group of the North Rhine-Westphalian CDU and in the office of the Thuringian Minister of the Interior", "regrettably failed to grasp the complexity of the 'left' " with his work on the party Die Linke . Sometimes the “bloodless” work reads “simply embarrassing”. The author, who "tries to get at the 'left' with his tools as an extremism researcher" and has produced "long loops about the meaningfulness of the systematic comparison of right-wing and left-wing extremist movements", shows "foaming at the mouth". He conveys a sub-complex picture of his subject.

In 2011 together with Rudolf van Hüllen authored book Links Extreme - Germany underestimated danger? Bergsdorf dealt more generally with the left edge of the political spectrum in Germany, although again a significant part of the work of the party was dedicated to Die Linke . The book was received controversially. The small party MLPD filed an injunction against statements concerning them in the book, with which the plaintiffs were partially successful.
