Rudolf van Hüllen

Rudolf van Hüllen (* 1957 in Krefeld ) is a German political scientist and extremism researcher .

Life

After studying political science , modern history and law at the Rheinische Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universität Bonn , van Hüllen started working for Karl Dietrich Bracher in 1988 with a dissertation on ideology and power struggle among the Greens. Investigation of the programmatic and internal organizational development of a German "movement party" to become a Dr. phil. PhD .

He then worked in political education , including for the Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung and the educational agency Responsibility in State and Society . From 1987 to 2006 van Hüllen worked as a consultant and head of division in the left-wing extremism and left-wing terrorism departments at the Federal Office for the Protection of the Constitution (BfV) in Cologne. His focus was on the evaluation of Orthodox-Communist, Maoist and Trotskyist aspirations. At the Federal University of Applied Sciences for Public Administration in Brühl, he lectured in the Office for the Protection of the Constitution. Today he works as a freelance extremism researcher for political foundations and institutions. He published u. a. in the yearbook Extremism & Democracy .

In 2014 he became a full external member of the inquiry commission "Consequences of the series of murders of the National Socialist Underground (NSU)" of the state parliament of Baden-Württemberg .

Controversy

Van Hüllen takes a critical look at the association of those persecuted by the Nazi regime - Bund der Antifaschisteninnen and Antifaschisten (VVN-BdA). He does not consider them to be an “alliance partner for democrats”, as the VVN-BdA “advocates the introduction of a Stalinist variant of socialism and the abolition of democracy, freedom and human rights” and has “a symbiosis with autonomous violent criminals”. In his opinion, Wolfgang Schäuble is “partly responsible” for the fact that “left-wing extremist violence against police officers in“ anti-fascist ”demonstrations has recently also been financed from tax revenues via the VVN-BdA.” In 2010, Saxony-Anhalt's Secretary of State Rüdiger Erben criticized (SPD) the classification of the VVN-BdA as a "Trojan horse for the engagement against right-wing extremists" as inappropriate, "in view of the suffering of members of this organization in concentration camps and prisons of the Nazi state". In contrast, van Hüllen believes that the resistance against National Socialism deserves “recognition and respect”, and yet after 1945 one was not only allowed to “accept what they argued against” but “also had to ask critically what they stood for”.

In 2011 he published a book ( Left extremist - Germany's underestimated danger? ) About left extremism with the political scientist Harald Bergsdorf .

After the MLPD, which was the subject of the publication, went to court with an action for injunctive relief, an "embarrassing process" ensued for the protection of the constitution. Van Hüllen had to disclose the evidence supporting his allegations in court. He said that the party's representation was based "about 50 percent on reports for the protection of the Constitution". The court stated that it thought “hardly anything” of the evidential value of this information. However, it qualified most of the statements in question not as statements of fact, but as expressions of opinion that are permissible. The Schöningh-Verlag did not want to distribute the book any more, a revision is not worthwhile. In 2014 the e-book edition was still available from the publisher. From 2011 to the end of March 2013, 1500 copies were put on sale.
