In his artistic work as a sculptor, Esterbauer deals, among other things, with smaller sculptures ("models") made of wood and plaster, and above all with sculptures made of wood, stone, metal and other materials. One of the main topics is simple basic geometric shapes , which he works on by “splitting, cutting, spreading, bending open, breaking through, stacking on top of one another and with “exhausting the resilience of the material [...] new approaches to form and further to the possibility of content expression” .

Esterbauer is committed to social issues and questions about a humane future for society; Among other things, he participates as an artist in aid projects of “ Pro Mente Upper Austria ”, which campaigns for mentally disadvantaged and disabled people, and is active in the regional future project “Innd 'Zukunft”.
