Stefan Howald (* 1953 in Brugg ) is a Swiss journalist , publicist , editor and translator .

Howald studied German , history and literary criticism in Zurich and Berlin . In 1983 he received his doctorate with a thesis on Robert Musil's novel. Since 1976 he has worked for the Zürcher Tages-Anzeiger , first as a freelancer, then from 1984 to 1991 as an editor, first in the Frontpage / Reports department, then as sole responsible for the newly created Zeitzeichen page, from 1987 as culture editor. There he met the journalist Rea Brändle again, whom he already knew from his studies. In 1991 he moved to London , where he worked as a cultural correspondent for Swiss and German newspapers, as a translator and book author until 2003. In 2003 he returned to Switzerland, worked for three years at the NGO Aktion Finanzplatz Schweiz-Third World and was an editor at the alternative WOZ Die Wochenzeitung in Zurich from 2010 to 2018 ; since then permanent employee.

Howald has written, translated and edited around 20 books since 1994, including biographies by Peter Weiss , Karl Viktor von Bonstetten , George Orwell , Eric Ambler and Walter Jonas ; from English he has transcribed detective novels and a biography on Noam Chomsky and works by the Scottish author Stuart Hood ; he has written a cultural history on the relationship between Switzerland and England, contributed to a standard work on the history of the religious-socialist movement in Switzerland and published a book about the artist Bruno Weber . In 2014 he published a study on the history of democracy in Rotpunktverlag. In 2015 he first translated stories by the Baron von Münchhausen , which the original author of the first Münchhausen edition, Rudolf Erich Raspe , had published in England in 1792, into German and edited them together with Bernhard Wiebel. His book Links und bündig, WOZ the weekly newspaper: an alternative media history was published in 2018 . In 2020 he again published an anthology on the Münchhausen phenomenon with Bernhard Wiebel.

In 1981, Stefan Howald was one of the founders of the Swiss theoretical journal contradiction , on whose advisory board he still sits today. In 1995 he was involved in the launch of Philosophy Football FC in London. He was also involved in the Oral History Project of the London Research Group for German Exile Studies and contributed to the Changing Country study . The Experience and Achievement of German-speaking Exiles from Hitler in Britain from 1933 to Today , which was published in 2002. Howald is also on the Board of Trustees of the Bonstettiana and worked on various volumes of the Edition Bonstettiana; he also edited an anthology with texts by Johannes von Müller. In 2013, on the occasion of Georg Büchner's 200th birthday, he founded the “Friends of Georg Büchner - Linksbüchnerians” together with Armin Büttner and Adrian Riklin. Since autumn 2018 he has been part of the operating group of the book room f in Zurich-Seebach, which contains two libraries and offers a regular program of events.
