Stefan Matschiner (born May 14, 1975 in Laakirchen ) is a former Austrian middle-distance runner and sports manager who used blood doping for some of his athletes.

Career

Matschiner grew up without his father, the FPÖ politician and lawyer Robert Aspöck . After completing secondary school in Laakirchen, he went to school at the HTBLA Vöcklabruck with the branch of industrial engineering and mechanical engineering . He later studied at the Vienna University of Economics and Business and at the University of Memphis in the USA.

Running career until 2004

Already during his school days, Matschiner was active as a middle distance runner and was able to achieve national successes. His colleagues included Günther Weidlinger and Christian Pflügl . Matschiner was junior national champion over 800 m and 1500 m in 1994 and U23 champion over 1500 m in 1995. In 1996 (Morocco) and 2003 (France) he took part in the military world championships in cross country.

In 2002 he became indoor state champion over 1500 m and qualified for the European Athletics Indoor Championships in Vienna , where he was eliminated in the semifinals.

He later admitted using EPO and Metandienone towards the end of his playing days . In 2004 he ended his career as a runner.

Sports management since 2003

In 2003, Matschiner founded the International Sports Agency and from then on worked as a sports manager - among other things - for Kenyan marathon runners. Matschiner was on site for the doping scandal involving the Austrian cross-country skiing team under coach Walter Mayer during the 2006 Winter Olympics .

He looked after the athletes Michael Boogerd , Lisa Hütthaler , Michael Rasmussen and Bernhard Kohl , among others . The latter achieved 3rd place overall at the Tour de France 2008 and the jersey of the best climber, which was later revoked due to the transfer of EPO.

2008 doping investigation

Matschiner maintained close contacts with the Vienna blood bank Humanplasma, where blood transfusions were often performed.

In 2008 he was accused by Bernhard Kohl and in 2009 by Lisa Hütthaler. He was sentenced to 15 months in prison in 2010, one month of which was unconditional and the rest was suspended with three years probation. Since he was already five weeks in custody had spent, he did not have more to jail.

His statements and disclosures in the course of the negotiations against him also led to numerous investigations against various international athletes, coaches and associations.

The doping equipment, such as a centrifuge, was sold by Matschiner for 50,000 euros to Erfurt sports doctor Mark Schmidt, who was accused of doping aid as part of the Aderlass 2019 operation .
