Stefan Rettenegger (born February 3, 2002 in Schwarzach im Pongau ) is an Austrian Nordic combined athlete . At the 2020 Winter Youth Olympic Games in Lausanne , he won the gold medal both individually and with the mixed team.

Career

Rettenegger, who competes for TSU St. Veit , started ski jumping in St. Veit im Pongau at the age of four . Already in his international debut at the end of August 2014 at the School Grand Prix in Oberstdorf , he finished first with two fourth places. He achieved his first podium placement at the beginning of September 2016 in the Youth Cup in Oberstdorf, when he finished the competition on the middle hill and over 2.5 km in third place. He celebrated his first victories at international level in March 2017 in the Alpencup in Hinterzarten and in the Youth Cup in Trondheim . At the Nordic Ski Games of the OPA 2018 in Planica , he won the silver medal in the junior competition behind Johannes Lamparter and the gold medal with the team.

On January 26, 2019, Rettenegger competed in the Continental Cup for the first time in Planica and finished 23rd straight away in the points. In his other participations, too, he was consistently in the top thirty, which was ultimately enough for 51st place in the overall standings. Rettenegger was nominated for the Austrian B-team for the 2019/20 season. In the summer of 2019, however, he was allowed to start at the highest level in the Grand Prix , where he attracted attention with 15th place on his debut in Tschagguns . For the winter, the 2020 Winter Youth Olympic Games in Lausanne were in the foreground, which is why he did not appear internationally until the Games. Finally, Rettenegger dominated the individual competition from the Les Tuffes ski jump and over 6 kilometers, so that he could win the gold medal before Perttu Reponen . He also won first place in the mixed team jumping together with Lisa Hirner , Julia Mühlbacher and Marco Wörgötter . On January 31, 2020, Rettenegger made his debut in the World Cup as part of the Nordic Combined Triples in Seefeld , but missed the points. Therefore, he started in the further course of the season in the Continental Cup , where he reached the podium for the first time in third at the mass start in Eisenerz . Against this background, Rettenegger was traded as a secret favorite before the Nordic Junior World Ski Championships 2020 in Oberwiesenthal and finally took a top position with sixth place in the Gundersen individual. In addition, he and Thomas Rettenegger , Johannes Lamparter and Fabio Obermeyr safely won the gold medal with the team.

Personal

His brother Thomas (* 2000) is also active as a Nordic combined athlete. Rettenegger belonged to the performance group of the Federal and Sport Real High School (HIB) in Saalfelden.
