The stone clover ( Trifolium saxatile ) is a plant from the genus clover ( Trifolium ) in the family of legumes (Fabaceae). It is placed within the genus in the Trifolium section , Arvensia subsection . The species should not be confused with the genus sweet clover ( Melilotus ).

Stone clover ( Trifolium saxatile )

The stone clover is an annual, herbaceous plant that reaches heights of between five and 15 centimeters. It forms loose lawns up to 50 cm in size. The stems are prostrate to ascending and covered with hair. The leaves are threefold, with the individual leaflets 4 to 6 millimeters long. They are inverted heart-shaped and hairy on both sides.

The rounded inflorescences are six to eight millimeters wide and are surrounded by stipules. The sessile flowers are 3 to 4 millimeters long. The calyx is densely hairy. The inconspicuous crown is white or pink and as long as the chalice. The flowering period extends from July to August.

distribution

The stone clover has its main distribution area in the western Alps. There it occurs in the Dauphiné ( Mont Pelvoux ), Savoy , the Pennine Alps , Piedmont . Also widespread in Tyrol . It grows at altitudes of up to 3100 meters.

The plant prefers dry rubble, moraine debris, sandy alluvion and silicate gravel (mica schist) as a location .

The Fauna-Flora-Habitat Directive of the European Union lists Trifolium saxatile as endangered.
