rock Granite porphyry , basalt

The Steinkuppe is an 806 meter high wooded elevation south of Holzhau in the Saxon Eastern Ore Mountains , near the border with the Czech Republic .

geography

To the northeast is Teichhaus , to the east is Moldava , to the southeast is the Pastviny desert , to the south is Betteleck , to the southwest is Horní Ves and Český Jiřetín and to the northwest is Holzhau .

geology

The former quarry northwest below the summit is a geological outcrop , where basalt was previously mined, for example for paving stones. The result is this deposit during the strong volcanic activity in the era Cenozoic about 30 million years ago when lava existing old porphyritic granite pierced in the ground and a source tip made of basalt. This basalt has a high proportion of the minerals olivine and nepheline . The rock originally formed basalt columns five meters long and 30 cm in diameter that converged at the summit.

outlook

From the summit the view opens to the northwest of Holzhau and the valley of the Freiberg Mulde . The slope below was previously used as a ski jump for skiers.
