The Steling is 658.3 m above sea level. NHN the highest elevation in the Aachen city region . The German - Belgian border runs over the hilltop. Since Belgium relates its heights to Ostend, the Belgian altitude is 660 m OP
Geographical location
The steling is located on the western edge of the Hohes Venn-Eifel nature park . At its southern foot lies Mützenich , a district of Monschau . On the north slope is the headwaters of the Weser , which flows through the Weser dam near Eupen to Liège into the Ourthe .

The High Fens to the south and west benefit from the steling, as the elevation causes damp Atlantic winds to rain down there.
Tourism and trivia
About 700 m southwest of the highest mountain point is the striking quartzite rock "Kaiser Karls Bettstatt" as a tourist attraction.
On the mountain and the surrounding meadows, common hedges made of red beech can be found for the Monschau Heckenland , as a fence around the forage pastures and hay meadows.
From the summit of the Steling you have a wide view of the northern Eifel and with a very good view you can see the Siebengebirge near Bonn and the Cologne Cathedral .
On the Steling there is a private weather station for the Rureifel and Monschau area, whose services are also used by the surrounding communities.
