Paul Jostock

Paul Jostock (born December 17, 1895 in Köwerich , † April 24, 1965 in Stuttgart ) was a German statistician and social scientist .

Life

Paul Jostock - eldest son of the winemaker Peter Jostock and his wife Katharina Regnery - studied at the Albert-Ludwigs-University Freiburg , also with Eduard Heimann . 1925 Jostock in Freiburg with Götz Briefs Dr. rer. pole. PhD. The topic of his dissertation was: The Future of Capitalism in Social Science Literature. He entered the service of the German Reich Statistical Office in 1927. Because he did not want to support the Nazi regime, but was organized in some resistance groups, and later because of health problems he was unable to pursue an academic career. Professionally, he developed into a high-ranking statistician and after the Second World War he built up the State Statistical Service of Baden-Württemberg.

Shortly before his bombing in May 1944, a secret meeting of July 20 resistance fighters took place in his apartment.

Between 1945 and 1952 Jostock was director of the Karlsruhe statistical (state) office, from 1946 to 1952 he was also director of the statistical office of the former state of Württemberg-Baden. This was followed by his presidency at the Baden-Württemberg State Statistical Office from 1953 to 1961.

Jostock wrote socio-philosophical works in which he criticized capitalism as well as socialism and collectivism in the strongest possible terms. He developed an independent path for social reforms based on solidarity, subsidiarity and a Christian image of man. The creation of humane living conditions for families was particularly important to him.

Together with Götz Briefs, Theodor Brauer , Gustav Gundlach , Franz H. Mueller, Heinrich Rommen and Oswald von Nell-Breuning , Paul Jostock was one of the members of the Königswinter Circle at the Institute for Social and Economic Order in Königswinter .
