Stepan Porfyrowytsch Wytwyzkyj ( Ukrainian Степан Порфирович Витвицький ; born March 13, 1884 in Uhornyky , Kingdom of Galicia and Lodomeria , Austria-Hungary ; † October 9, 1965 in New York City , United States ) was a Ukrainian political lawyer, diplomat, and From March 1954 until his death he was the second President of the Ukrainian People's Republic in exile.

Life

Wytwyzkyj was born into a family of teachers and went to school in Stanislau . He studied law at the Lviv University and following which at the University in Vienna , where he was awarded a doctorate in 1910 where in law and then as a lawyer in Drohobych worked.

After the founding of the West Ukrainian People's Republic , he became a member of the Ukrainian National Democratic Party in its parliament and represented it in foreign policy. He was also co-author of the law on the unification of the Western Ukrainian Republic with the Ukrainian People's Republic . In 1924 he worked again in his law firm in Drohobych, but remained politically active as a leading figure in the Ukrainian National Democratic Party (UNDO). Between 1935 and 1939 he was a member of the Polish Sejm .

In 1939 he emigrated to the West and in 1945 took part in the founding of the Central European Ukrainian immigration office in Germany, where he became head of the legal department. In 1948 Wytwyzkyj was involved in the founding of the Ukrainian National Council (PA), as its authorized representative he went to the USA in 1951. In March 1954 he was elected to succeed Andrij Liwyzkyj as chairman of the board of directors of the Ukrainian People's Republic in Exile (President of the Ukrainian government in exile). Wytwyzkyj died in New York City at the age of 81 and was buried in St. Andrew's Cemetery in South Bound Brook , New Jersey .
