Stephan Báthory (Palatine of Hungary)

Stephan Báthory von Ecsed , Hungarian: Báthory István , (* 1490 ; † May 8, 1530 in Devín ) was a Hungarian nobleman and military leader . His highest position was that of the Palatine of Hungary.

Life

He was the eldest son of Andreas Báthory von Ecsed (1445–1495) and nephew of Stephan Báthory , a military leader and later voivode of Transylvania .

As Comes von Temesvár he fought against the rebel leader György Dózsa in 1514 . On May 28, 1519 he was elected Palatine of Hungary. In this office he supported Ferdinand I as a candidate for the Hungarian royal throne after the battle of Mohács .

His wife was Sophia Duchess of Mazovia . They had a daughter, Clara, who married Karl, Duke of Munsterberg . He died in 1530. Báthory had several siblings including the brothers Andreas and Georg and the sisters Elisabeth and Madeleine.
