Stephan Fritzsche (born October 4, 1954 ) is a former German soccer player. For BSG Chemie Leipzig and 1. FC Lokomotive Leipzig , he was active as a defender in the GDR Oberliga , the top division in GDR football , in the 1970s and 1980s .

Athletic career

After playing in the junior team for 1. FC Lok Leipzig up to this point, Stephan Fritzsche began a three-year career as an army footballer in 1973. This initially led him to the Army Sports Association (ASG) forward Cottbus . There he played eleven point games in the second-rate GDR league in the 1973/74 season . At the end of the season, the team was relegated and was then transferred to Kamenz . There she appeared as ASG Vorwärts Kamenz in the third-class district league Dresden . In May 1976 Fritzsche was released from the National People's Army and he joined the league relegated BSG Chemie Leipzig. There he played three seasons in the GDR league until 1979, where he was missing a total of only four point games. The Leipziger reached the promotion round to the league every time, in which Fritzsche only missed four of the total of 24 qualifying games. Chemistry only managed to return to the top league at the third attempt. Even in his first league season in 1979/80 Fritzsche kept his regular place and played 25 of the 26 league games played as a defender. The Leipziger had to relegate to the GDR league again after a year, where they stayed for the next three seasons. Fritzsche stayed one more season with BSG Chemie, for which he completed all 22 league games in 1980/81.

Then Fritzsche moved to local rivals and top division club 1. FC Lokomotive Leipzig. He stayed there only for one season, in which he was used as a defender in the first half of the season in seven point games in 1981/82. In addition, he was called up in three games for the European Cup Winners' Cup : 1. FC Lok - Politechnica Timisoara (Qualif. 5: 0), 1. FC Lok - Swansea City (1st round 2: 1), Velež Mostar - 1. FC Lok (2nd round 0: 3 in good condition).

For the 1982/83 season Stephan Fritzsche returned to BSG Chemie Leipzig, which was still playing in the GDR league. With the help of Fritzsche, the chemists managed to return to the league this season, in which Fritzsche was involved with 14 league games and all eight promotion games. Two more league seasons followed, in which Fritzsche was part of the regular staff and played 44 of the 52 point games as a defender. After Chemie Leipzig was relegated from the league again in 1985, Fritzsche played his last season in GDR-wide football in 1985/86. After a league reform, 34 season games were played in the GDR league, of which the 32-year-old Fritzsche played 23 games.

After his departure from the higher-class GDR football he had a record of 76 league games (two goals) - two of them in the decision to relegate in 1984 -, 132 league games (six goals), 28 league promotion games (one goal) and three European Cup appearances ( without hits).
