Stephan Hering-Hagenbeck (born September 29, 1967 in Frankfurt am Main as Stephan Hering ) is a German zoologist . Since 2020 he has been the sole managing director of the Schönbrunn Zoo in Vienna .

Life

Family background

Due to the professional activity of his father Norbert Hering, Stephan Hering moved to South Africa at the age of five . He describes his childhood there as very formative for his further life. In South Africa his interest in nature and animals was aroused. His first pet was a snake, which he received as a gift from his schoolmates when he was six.

Education and professional career

Stephan Hering studied biology specializing in parasitology in Bochum, Paris and at the Humboldt University in Berlin . During his studies at Humboldt University, he met his wife Bettina Hagenbeck. He returned to Africa for five years to do research in the course of his dissertation on the parasitic fauna of wild reptiles in South Africa.

Work for zoological gardens

The zoologist married Bettina Hagenbeck in 1995 into a family of animal gardeners. The Hagenbeck Zoo in Hamburg has a long tradition and has developed pioneering innovations such as panoramas and moat systems. In 2000 he became operations manager at the Tierpark Hagenbeck, 2005 managing director and from 2012 to 2018 he was zoological director. During his tenure, he was responsible for numerous construction projects, such as the tropical aquarium (2007), the elephant open-air hall (2006), the New Arctic Ocean (2012), the onager facility (2012) and the kangaroo habitat (2011). Together with his father-in-law Claus Hagenbeck, he designed the Orangutan Dome (2003), an innovative, covered outdoor area. The Tropical Aquarium (€ 21.5 million) and the New Arctic Ocean (€ 20.5 million) were the largest projects that the Hagenbeck Zoo had implemented since it opened in 1907.

In 2015 he founded a general planning and architecture office for zoos and aquariums. With his partner, architect Sezai I. Candan, and his team he developed, among other things, the Polarium in the Rostock Zoo and the elephant enclosure in the Berlin Zoo. In addition, with his expertise in the field of layout design, he has advised zoological gardens worldwide for over 10 years: from Pairi Daiza in Belgium to the Moscow Zoo to the Al Ain Zoo in the United Arab Emirates.

At the end of October 2019, Hering-Hagenbeck was presented by Federal Minister Elisabeth Udolf-Strobl and Wolfgang Schüssel , Chairman of the Supervisory Board of Schönbrunner Tiergarten, as the successor to Dagmar Schratter as Director of Schönbrunn Zoo , and he succeeded her in this role on January 1, 2020.
