Walter Fiedler (zoologist)

Walter Fiedler (born August 8, 1922 in Großharras , Lower Austria; † August 5, 2009 in Vienna ) was an Austrian zoologist and long-time director of Vienna's Schönbrunn Zoo .

biography

Fiedler, son of a teacher, graduated with distinction in Wiener Neustadt in 1940, then studied history, geography and biology at the University of Vienna . After the Second World War and the capture by the Americans, Fiedler continued his studies from 1947 and matriculated in zoology and anthropology . In 1950 he received his doctorate with the dissertation "Morphology of the jaw muscles of the Oscines ". In 1969 he completed his habilitation at the University of Vienna and in 1981 he received the title of professor. From 1967 to the end of 1987 Fiedler was director of the Schönbrunn zoo.

Honors

In 1973 Fiedler was awarded the Golden Badge of Honor for his services to the Republic of Austria and in 1982 the Golden Badge of Honor for his services to the State of Vienna.
