Stephan II. Koháry (born March 12, 1649 in Csabragh , † March 29, 1731 in Csabragh ) was a Hungarian general and poet from the Koháry family .

Life

Stephan II was the eldest son of Stephan I. Koháry and Judith Balassa de Gyarma. He was born at Csabragh Castle and studied at the Jesuit College of Tyrnau . In 1667 Leopold I appointed him in command of the Fülek Fortress . In 1682 Emmerich Thököly besieged Castle Fülek for several weeks during the Kuruzzre uprising, but could not take it. Stephan Kohary was then overwhelmed by his own people and handed over to Thököly. He was imprisoned for 3 years and 3 months and was only released after the uprising was put down. Emperor Leopold received him solemnly in Vienna, handed him a gold chain and referred to him as Speculum Fidelitatis , mirror of loyalty.

Stephan Koháry was also rewarded with real estate. He was appointed hereditary county of Hont County, received the dominions of Murany , Derenczeny and Baloghvár and was appointed "Royal Judge and Council". A little later he acquired the rule of Kecskemét and founded a Piarist high school there that still exists today. In a will of January 1723, he founded a Fideikommiss from his property .

Stephan II remained unmarried and died in 1731 at Csabragh Castle. His heir was his nephew Andreas Josef Graf von Koháry (1694–1757).

While still a prisoner of war he began to write poetry, unusual for the time, in the Hungarian language. Stephan II also coined the motto of the family "DAT DEUS CUI VOLT" - God gives it to whoever he wants.
