Stephan Lehnstaedt
Stephan Lehnstaedt (born 1980 in Munich ) is a German historian and professor of Holocaust studies and Jewish studies at Touro College Berlin .
Life
Stephan Lehnstaedt studied history and received his doctorate from the University of Munich in 2008 . In 2016 he completed his habilitation in modern and contemporary history at the Technical University of Chemnitz . From 2005 to 2009 he was a research assistant at the Institute for Contemporary History (IfZ) in Munich, and from 2010 to 2016 he worked in Warsaw at the German Historical Institute . He deals with imperialism, the history of the two world wars, the Holocaust and its reparation.
Lehnstaedt was an expert in social court proceedings from 2008 to 2010 and an expert for the Bundestag on ghetto pensions in 2012 . For his research work and his contribution to German-Polish reconciliation, he received the order “ Missio Reconciliationis ” and the medal “Powstanie w Getcie Warszawskim” (Anielewicz Medal) from the Association of Jewish Fighters and Victims of World War II in Poland in 2015 . In 2017 he received the order "Za Wybitne Zasługi" from the Association of Polish War Veterans and Former Political Prisoners .
Lehnstaedt is publicly involved in current issues related to the Holocaust and Polish history; in 2018, for example, he proposed the construction of a German-Polish history museum. In 2017 he was an expert in a hearing of the Bundestag subcommittee on foreign cultural and educational policy as an expert on the commemoration of Aktion Reinhardt . He publishes regularly and a. in the Süddeutsche Zeitung , the Tagesspiegel and the Jüdische Allgemeine .
In 2017 he and his students organized the exhibition “In the Face of Destruction. Work and Resistance in the Ghettos, 1941–1944 ” curated for and with the German Resistance Memorial Center , 2019 with the House of the Wannsee Conference Memorial and the Vienna Library in London, the highly acclaimed bilingual one shown by the United Nations in New York Exhibition “Tracking and Enlightening. The first generation of Holocaust research ”.
In 2016 Lehnstaedt became Professor of Holocaust Studies and Jewish Studies at Touro College Berlin. He previously taught at the University of Munich, the Humboldt University of Berlin and the London School of Economics .
Memberships
Lehnstaedt is a member of the scientific advisory boards of the Forum: Austria-Hungary in the First World War, the Foundation for Flight, Expulsion, Reconciliation and the journals "Studia nad Totalitaryzmami i Wiekiem XX | Totalitarian and 20th Century Studies" and "Przegłąd Zachodni".
