reception

The media theorist Peter Weibel characterizes Schwingeler's book "Artwork Computer Game - Digital Games as Artistic Material" as a standard work and states in the foreword:

“Stephan Schwingeler's dissertation introduces a new genre into the discourse of art history. Schwingeler underlines the importance of the computer game medium for art history. He shows the deficit and at the same time fills the void by not only identifying the media properties of the computer game in a reference work and thoroughly processing it, but also convincingly and critically identifying the computer game as artistic material and thus as a new genre in the canon of the visual arts.
