Stephan Freiherr von Jovanović ( Croatian Stjepan barun Jovanović ), (born January 5, 1828 in Pazarište (near Gospić ), Croatia - Slavonia ; †  December 8, 1885 in Zadar / Italian Zara / ) was a Croatian nobleman and lieutenant field marshal in the Austro-Hungarian army .

Life

Jovanović joined the Habsburg (Austro-Hungarian) army in 1845 and fought under Radetzky in Italy from 1848–49 . In 1850 he was transferred to the General Staff and later adjutant to General Gabriel Freiherr von Rodich, who was active in southern Dalmatia .

Between 1861 and 1865 Jovanović was Consul General of Austria in Sarajevo . As an excellent expert on Bosnia , Montenegro , Herzegovina and the Krivošije , he returned to military service as a colonel in 1865 . In 1866 he was able to distinguish himself in the war against Italy.

When the uprising broke out in Dalmatia, Jovanović was given command of a mountain brigade in Kotor (Cattaro) in 1869 and stayed there after the rebels had been induced to cease hostilities through negotiations.

In 1875 he was raised to the rank of baron and in 1876 appointed field marshal lieutenant. In 1877 he took over command of the 18th troop division in Split (Spalato) . The following year he carried out the occupation of Herzegovina and subjugated the entire country within a few days and with almost no losses. He was then used there as commander in chief and head of administration. In 1882 he had to suppress the uprising in the Krivošije and then became governor in Dalmatia and military commander in Zadar.

For his achievements he received the Knight's Cross of the Maria Theresa Order in his 170th doctorate on May 2, 1879 .

Stephan Freiherr von Jovanović died on December 8, 1885 in Zadar.
