Stephanus "Stef" Walbeek (born May 6, 1948 ) is a former Dutch football player . He played 261 games in the Eredivisie for Sparta Rotterdam and Go Ahead Eagles Deventer and also played 13 games for Hertha BSC in the Bundesliga .

Player career

Stef Walbeek made his debut in 1968 under coach Wiel Coerver in the first team of Sparta Rotterdam . At the end of the season he had completed 15 league games in his debut season and in 1969/70 Walbeek was an integral part of the regular line-up with 29 appearances. With fifth place, Sparta qualified alongside FC Twente Enschede for the Messestädte-Pokal 1970/71 . There Sparta first prevailed against the Icelandic representative ÍA Akranes 6-0 and 9-0. In the second round they defeated Coleraine FC and only failed in the third round at Bayern Munich . Walbeek had played all six games. While they missed the previous year's position in the league with sixth place, they moved into the final in the KNVB Cup . There you met the defending champion Ajax Amsterdam . In the first game, the two teams separated 2-2, which is why a replay was necessary. The early goal by Gerrie Mühren equalized Stef Walbeek shortly after the restart. However, when Johan Neeskens scored the 2-1 after almost an hour of play, the defeat was sealed. Since Ajax was allowed to take part in the European Cup as defending champion, Sparta Rotterdam qualified as a cup finalist for the European Cup Winners' Cup in 1971/72 . There you could turn off Levski Sofia in the first round , but retired in the second round against Red Star Belgrade . In addition to the four games in European Cup, Walbeek completed 32 games in the Eredivisie . Fourth place was not enough to qualify for a European competition. In 1972/73 , Walbeek scored eight goals in 32 league games as never before in his career. But again Sparta Rotterdam missed international business with fourth place. After finishing eighth in 1973/74 and six in 1974/75 , Stephanus Walbeek left after 187 games in the Eredivisie Rotterdam .

Instead, he signed a contract with Hertha BSC . With the Berliners he played 13 games in the Bundesliga season 1975/76 under Georg Keßler , who had already trained him at Sparta . But already in the spring of 1976 he returned to his homeland to Go Ahead Eagles Deventer .

In Deventer Walbeek immediately became a regular player. In the following season , Walbeek was one of the regulars and played 33 of the 34 league games. In the 1977/78 season , the Go Ahead Eagles needed a win on the last day of the game in a direct encounter with the competitor for relegation FC Amsterdam . With two goals from Walbeek, who had previously lost his place, they defeated their rivals and were able to keep the class. After a new coach was hired in Joop Brand in the 1978/79 season , Walbeek hardly got a chance due to injury, so that at the end of the season he turned his back on the Go Ahead Eagles Deventer and switched to the third-rate club Rohda Raalte .
