Stephen le Moine

Stephanus le Moine also: Étienne Le Moyne, Monachus ; (* October 1624 in Caen ; † April 3, 1689 in Leiden ) was a French Reformed theologian.

Life

Nothing is known about Le Moine's first career. What is certain is that he initially studied under Pierre du Moulin (1568–1658) at the Sedan Academy . He continued his studies on December 28, 1644 at the University of Leiden , where he devoted himself primarily to the study of oriental languages and sacred antiquities. In 1650 he returned to France and became pastor of the Reformed parish in Rouen . On March 14, 1673, he received an appointment as professor of theology and pastor of the Walloon community in Leiden from the curators of the Leiden University.

However, after accepting this offer on January 12, 1674, he was imprisoned for his beliefs. He had helped a councilor's daughter to flee to England, who there accepted the Protestant faith. After his release, he was still vice-chairman of the Protestant synod in Caen in 1675. He then went to Oxford University , where he received his doctorate in theology in 1676. When he returned to Leiden, he gave his inaugural address on July 3, 1676, and took part in the university's organizational tasks as rector of the Alma Mater in 1677/78 .

Le Moine's work Varia sacra… was placed on the Roman index in 1687 by the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith .
