Stephen Alfred (born January 21, 1968 ) is a retired American track cyclist , originally from Trinidad and Tobago .

Athletic career

In 1998 Stephen Alfred started for Trinidad and Tobago at the Central America and Caribbean Games . He won bronze in the sprint and, together with Michael Philipps and Clinton Grant, silver in the team sprint . In the same year he took part in the Commonwealth Games in Kuala Lumpur and finished eighth in the sprint after beating the eventual Olympic champion Chris Hoy . After this competition, Alfred tested positive for the doping preparation norandrosterone and was banned for six months.

From the beginning of the 2000s, Alfred rode for the US cycling association USA Cycling . In 2003 and 2005 he was national champion in sprint, and in 2005 in keirin . In May and June 2006 he tested positive again (for hCG ) and was then banned for eight years. However, he was still listed in the pool of athletes to be tested, and when he was due to be tested for doping in 2007, Alfred refused the test. He was then banned for life.
