Stephen Michael Vincent Ryan CM (born January 1, 1826 in Almonte , Ontario , Canada , † April 10, 1896 in Buffalo , USA ) was Bishop of Buffalo .

Life

Stephen Michael Vincent Ryan entered St. Charles Borromeo Seminary in Overbrook , Pennsylvania in 1841 . Ryan joined the religious community of the Lazarists and made perpetual profession on May 6, 1846 . He received on 24 June 1849 the Bishop of Philadelphia , Francis Patrick Kenrick , the sacrament of Holy Orders .

In 1857 Stephen Michael Vincent Ryan became the General Visitation of the Lazarists in the United States.

On March 3, 1868, Pope Pius IX appointed him . to the Bishop of Buffalo. The Archbishop of New York , John McCloskey , donated him episcopal ordination on November 8 of the same year at St. Joseph's Cathedral in Buffalo ; Co- consecrators were the Bishop of Brooklyn , John Loughlin , and the Bishop of Toronto , John Joseph Lynch CM.

Stephen Michael Vincent Ryan attended the First Vatican Council . He revised the system of Catholic schools in the diocese of Buffalo and also founded the Catholic newspaper Catholic Union .
