Stephen Smith (* 22. July 1985 in Liverpool ) is a British professional boxer in the super featherweight division .

Amateur career

Stephen Smith won a bronze bantamweight medal at the European Junior Championships in Warsaw in 2003 . As an adult, he boxed featherweight and won the silver medal at the Commonwealth Championships in Glasgow in 2005 , when he failed only in the final at Olympian Anthresh Lalit Lakra. In March 2006 he won the Commonwealth Games in Melbourne . He defeated the Olympians Samuel Neequaye and Diwakar Prasad, the Welshman Darren Edwards and in the final the Asian champion Mehrullah Lassi.

He won another bronze medal in July 2006 at the European Championships in Plovdiv . After victories against Andrzej Liczik from Poland and the Belarusian Olympian Mikhail Biarnadski, he lost in the semifinals to the Russian European and World Champion Albert Selimow .

In 2007 Smith won the gold medal at the Commonwealth Championships in Liverpool and started at the 2007 World Championships in Chicago , where he was defeated in the first fight against Marcel Herfurth (14:20).

In 2008 he took part in the European Olympic qualification tournaments in Pescara and Athens . He defeated Antonín Lazok from the Czech Republic (19: 9), David Joyce from Ireland (27:19), Michał Chudecki from Poland (23: 7), Valentīns Morozovs from Latvia (16: 2) and Vasile Sandu from Romania (19: 9 ), but lost to Khedafi Djelkhir from France (demolition), Wilhelm Gratschow from Germany (13:18) and Alessio Di Savino from Italy (8:17), which meant that he could not qualify for the Olympic Games.

Professional career

Smith has been boxing for the pros since June 2008. By winning two points against John Simpson, he was British and Commonwealth featherweight champion. In September 2011 he suffered his first loss when he lost to Lee Selby by TKo. With eleven wins, including against Gary Buckland (27-2), Sergio Manuel Medina (39-6), Mauricio Javier Muñoz (28-4) and Devis Boschiero (37-3), he qualified for a world championship fight in super featherweight .

On April 16, 2016, he boxed against José Pedraza for the IBF world title, but lost the fight unanimously on points. On November 12, 2016 he fought again for a world title in super featherweight, but was also unanimously defeated in the fight for the WBA title against Jason Sosa .

On December 9, 2017, he lost to Francisco Vargas by technical decision . After a collision with the heads, Smith had seriously injured his ear, which is why the fight was stopped in the ninth round and the scoresheet was evaluated, on which Vargas was ahead.
