Stevan Stojanović Mokranjac ( Serbian - Cyrillic Стеван Стојановић Мокрањац * December 28, 1855 . Jul / January 9, 1856 greg. In Negotin ; † 28. September 1914 in Skopje ) is one of the most important Serbian composers and music educators of the 19th century. His nickname Mokranjac refers to the village of Mokranje , the birthplace of his father.

Stevan Stojanović studied mathematics at the University of Belgrade , then from 1879 to 1882 harmony and composition at the University of Music in Munich , among others with Josef Gabriel Rheinberger from 1884 to 1885 in Rome and from 1885 to 1887 at the Leipzig Conservatory . His work was heavily influenced by sacred and folk songs , and both styles of music were his inspiration for his works. One of his most famous pieces is the song cycle Rukoveti , which is based on folk music motifs from Bosnia , Serbia, Macedonia and Bulgaria . Several of his works are composed only for Orthodox worship use, such as the setting of the Holy Liturgy of John Chrysostom (1894–1895) with the Cherubine Hymn as the most impressive part.

In 1899 he founded the Belgrade Music School with Stanislav Binički , of which he became the first director and which today bears his name. Since 1906 Stevan Mokranjac belonged to the Serbian Academy of Sciences and Arts . Shortly after the outbreak of World War I , he and his family fled from embattled Belgrade to Skopje. In September 1923 Georg Weifert initiated the transfer of the deceased composer to an honorary grave in the New Cemetery in Belgrade. Stevan Stojanović Mokranjac is depicted on the current 50 dinars banknote of the Republic of Serbia.
