Georg Weifert

Georg Weifert ( Serbian Ђорђе Вајферт Djordje Vajfert * 15. June 1850 in Pancevo , Empire of Austria ; † 12. January 1937 in Belgrade ) was a Serbian -österreichischer brewer , the third governor of the Central Bank of the Kingdom of Serbia and the first governor of the central bank of the Kingdom of the Serbs, Croats and Slovenes . He is also considered the founder of modern mining in Serbia.

biography

After completing an economics college in Budapest , Georg Weifert graduated from the brewery school in Weihenstephan , Upper Bavaria . In 1867 he became a member of the Corps Agronomia . In 1872 he received Serbian citizenship and took over the brewery in Belgrade , founded two years earlier by his father Ignaz Weifert , the first modern brewery in what was then Serbia . The Belgrade Weifert beer won several awards at the Paris World Exhibitions in 1889 and 1900 .

Georg Weifert invested his profit in a brown coal mine near Kostolac , a copper mine near Bor and a hard coal mine near Podvis ( Knjaževac ). With his modern structured companies he became the richest man in Serbia at the time and was considered the largest industrialist in what was later to be Yugoslavia.

1000 dinars banknote

In 1890 Weifert was appointed governor of the Central Bank of the Kingdom of Serbia. He held this office until 1902 and from 1912 to 1918. During this time he tried to preserve the value of the Serbian dinar . Because of his merits, Weifert finally became governor of the central bank of the newly established Kingdom of Serbs, Croats and Slovenes in 1919 . The government ordinance on the exchange rate for the exchange of the Austro-Hungarian crown for the new dinar , which he supported, also led to great criticism, as the old dinar was exchanged 1: 1 for the new dinar, whereas the crown was exchanged at a ratio of 4: 1, which often led to the loss of assets of those citizens who were formerly citizens of Austria-Hungary . In 1926 he was elected Honorary Chairman of the Central Bank. His portrait is depicted on the current 1000 dinars banknote of the Republic of Serbia .

Family grave in Pančevo

Weifert had been a member of the Masonic Lodge Brotherhood in Belgrade since 1890 and was co-founder of the Grand Lodge of the Kingdom of Serbs, Croats and Slovenes in 1922 . He was considered an important patron and sponsor of humanitarian , charitable and cultural institutions. In 1921 he became President of the Banat Fire Brigade Association . In his hometown, a Roman Catholic church he financed was consecrated on July 26, 1923 in honor of his mother St. Anne . In the same year Alexander I personally awarded him a medal for his services. In the same year Weifert bequeathed his collection of ancient coins to the University of Belgrade and initiated the transfer of the late composer Stevan Mokranjac to an honorary grave in the city of Belgrade. In 1924 he had the entrance to the Roman Catholic cemetery in Pančevo designed with a new portal . In January 1937 he was buried in the family grave in the local cemetery.
