Stephen Valentine "Steve" Parr (born December 22, 1926 in Bamber Bridge , † August 6, 2019 ) was an English football player .

Career

Parr played in Preston local football for Farington Villa before he was signed by Liverpool FC in May 1948 , possibly he was already registered as an amateur with Liverpool from 1947. Initially only working for the reserve team, he took part in a tour of Sweden as part of a group of 16 in the summer of 1951. Because a regular defender was injured there with Eddie Spicer and Parr showed good performances as a substitute in the other tour games, he started under Don Welsh as a regular player in the first division season 1951/52 . Although he made 16 league appearances in the course of the season, Parr did not succeed in defending himself against his competitorsEnforce Bill Jones , Spicer and Ray Lambert .

In his last assignment for the first team in January 1953, he was a right-winger tried because the right-budgetary winger Jimmy Payne turned out long-term injured. The decisive factor for the experiment was probably a game against Derby County in November 1952 , when Parr moved to the right wing due to an injury and, according to the press, “despite his handicap, showed an extremely good performance there. He shot well, made some good crosses and almost secured a point for Liverpool with a very commendable attempt in the final minutes ”. The attempt to establish Parr as a striker failed, the game against Manchester City for goalkeeper Bert Trautmann ended in a 1-0 defeat, the press subsequently agreed that Parr “did not justify his lineup” and “the experiment was not a success ”. In the reserve team playing in the Central League Parr rose meanwhile to team captain, in 1954 he stood with this in the final of the Lancashire Senior Cup , which was lost 3-0 in the replay against Blackpool FC .

In May 1955 he moved to the Football League Third Division South for Exeter City on a free transfer . He started the season for Exeter in a goalless draw with Colchester United , but then fell out for several months due to an injury, during the rest of the season mostly Arnold Mitchell and Brian Doyle formed the defender pair, Parr made five league and two cup games by the end of the season Commitment. The following season 1956/57 he started again in the regular eleven, this time as a middle runner . After the first three games of the season ended without a win, he was replaced by Keith Harvey and did not come to the train until his departure at the end of the year.

In early December 1956 he moved back to the north-west of England and joined the club AFC Rochdale playing in the Third Division North . There he came in the rest of the season to 15 league appearances, mostly in the two defensive positions instead of Charlie Ferguson or Billy McCulloch , if they were canceled or acted in the runner row. On April 6, he was called up in an away game at Accrington Stanley as a center forward and scored his only goal in the Football League in the 2-1 defeat . After he had only come to one use in the 1957/58 season , he left Rochdale again in the summer of 1958.

As a result, he joined the Burscough FC playing in the Lancashire Combination , where he was not only a player, but also part of the coaching staff; After his professional career, he worked as an engineer .
