Steven Henry Strogatz (born August 13, 1959 in Torrington , Connecticut ) is an American physicist.

He is professor of theoretical and applied mechanics at Cornell University in Ithaca , USA . He is best known for his work in the field of synchronization of dynamic systems . Strogatz earned his PhD from Harvard University in 1989 and subsequently taught in the Mathematics Department of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology before moving to Cornell University in 1994.

His numerous publications cover the areas of applied mathematics , theoretical biology and chronobiology (in collaboration with Arthur Winfree ) and, above all, small world phenomena in networks . His work Collective dynamics of “small-world” networks , published in 1998 in collaboration with Duncan Watts , was one of the most cited publications in physics in the following ten years with 2,700 citations. In 2012 he was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences . For 2014 he was awarded the Euler Book Prize for The Joy of x . In 2015 he received the Lewis Thomas Prize and in 2019 the George Pólya Prize . He is a fellow of the American Mathematical Society .
