The Brandenburg Natural Landscapes Foundation is a non-profit organization. Its goal, the areas of former military training areas in Brandenburg to acquire in order to there since the times of the Prussian army up to the task of the last military use by the Western Group of CIS -Streitkräfte-1992 large-scale, largely unfragmented and ecologically valuable natural landscapes ( wet meadows and moors , heather , dune landscapes and forests) with numerous endangered animal and plant species, to leave them to natural succession and to demunition them (if necessary for safety), to set up hiking and biking trails and to create information boards and -to make material tangible for visitors. On most of the areas there are no conservation or development measures whatsoever (wilderness development).

The former military training areas in question are Jüterbog ( Forst Zinna ; 7,100 hectares ), Heidehof ( Heidehof ; 1,800 hectares), Lieberose (3,100 hectares) and Tangersdorf (700 hectares). So far, the foundation has been able to acquire 12,700 hectares from the Brandenburg soil society. The initial foundation capital was 4.82 million German marks .

The Brandenburg Natural Landscapes Foundation was set up on May 16, 2000 by private and state donors in Potsdam. It is the first institution in Germany to be set up jointly by private and public donors with a supraregional and even international character in the field of nature conservation. The signatories of the founding document on November 5, 1999 were the Ministry of Agriculture, Environmental Protection and Regional Planning of the State of Brandenburg (2.6 million DM), the Zoological Society Frankfurt von 1858 eV (2 million DM), the Naturschutzbund Deutschland eV (NABU), the Environmental foundation WWF Germany , the landscape support association Nuthe-Nieplitz-Niederung eV and the private donor Marlene Bensinger (these four donated 0.22 million DM). Numerous other organizations and people have since supported the foundation with donations and funds for projects have been raised. The legal seat of the foundation is Stücken in the district of Potsdam-Mittelmark , the office is in Potsdam , there are branches in the vicinity in Jüterbog and Lieberose. Advisory boards with representatives from all neighboring communities enable the population to influence the foundation's activities.

After it was established, Hubertus Meckelmann took over the chairmanship of the foundation, and Dr. Hans-Joachim Mader. Together they formulated the vision of the foundation “We, the Brandenburg Natural Landscapes Foundation, secure and network large wilderness areas so that nature can develop freely there. That is our contribution to the preservation of biological diversity. We create the primeval forests of tomorrow and bring people closer to the importance and beauty of undisturbed nature. ” Mader was founded in 2016 by Dr. Christof Schenck replaced. In 2018, Meckelmann handed over the chairmanship of the foundation to his previous deputy Friedrich-Wilhelm Ulmke.
