The Stillwater River is a 100 km long right tributary of the Yellowstone River in the central south of the US state Montana .

River course

The Stillwater River has its source in the Beartooth Mountains at an altitude of 2,670  m . It initially flows 50 km north. The river runs within the Absaroka-Beartooth Wilderness in the Custer National Forest . The West Fork Stillwater River flows into the river on the left at the settlement of Nye . This gradually turns to the northeast. At Absarokee , Rosebud Creek meets the Stillwater River when coming from the south. This still flows 17 km to its confluence with the Yellowstone River, 2 km west of Columbus . The river flows through Park County and Stillwater County .

Hydrology
