Stoczek ( German  Springborn ) is a village in the rural municipality of Kiwity in the Warmian-Masurian Voivodeship in the Lidzbarski powiat in northern Poland . It is a Marian pilgrimage site with 330 inhabitants.

history

The village received its handicrafts on November 18, 1349 from the Warmian bishop Hermann of Prague. At the latest since the beginning of the 17th century there was a Lady Chapel with a statue of the Virgin Mary, which was visited by pilgrims. Bishop Szyszkowski had a stone round church built in 1639–1641 as a votive offering after the end of the first Polish-Swedish war. The church was handed over to the Bernardines from Wartenburg . Initially the friars lived in wooden buildings, but in 1666 Bishop Jan Wydżga donated the stone monastery buildings.

Under Bishop Załuski, work began in 1708 to create a cloister with four corner chapels around the church , based on the model of Heiligelinde . The building was only completed and expanded under Bishop Teodor Andrzej Potocki . The place of pilgrimage experienced its heyday in the 40s and 50s of the 18th century, when it almost equaled Heiligelinde in popularity.

After the secularization of the order in Prussia, the state took over the church and monastery. At times the operation of the monastery was renewed by the Diocese of Warmia , for example in 1870–1973 by Lazarists and in 1926 by Franciscans .

The monastery gained some fame because it was here that the Primate of Poland, Cardinal Stefan Wyszyński , was interned by the communists from October 1953 to October 1954 . The primate lived in rooms on the first floor of the monastery and was accompanied by a priest and a nun. After Radio Free Europe made the primate's stay public, he was taken to Prudnik in Upper Silesia.

The Basilica of the Visitation of the Virgin Mary is dedicated to Maria Regina Pacis (Queen of Peace).
