Stones Throw is an American music label founded in 1996 by DJ and producer Chris Manak aka Peanut Butter Wolf. The label is based in Los Angeles and has a number of artists under contract whose music ranges from hip-hop , funk , soul and jazz .

history

After Peanut Butter Wolf became active in the underground and his partner Charizma died in December 1993, he began to work harder on his career to make his and Charizma's music known. A song by Charizma was part of a compilation by Bomb Hip Hop magazine. Chris Manak became better known in the scene and produced songs by Kool Keith . He began his entry into the label business with an EP for Southpaw Records . In 1996 he finally founded Stones Throw Records. The name came from a saying his mother used when Manak and Charizma annoyed her. The first release was the single My World Premier by him and Charizma. Originally founded only for his and Charizma's music, the label developed its own dynamic. Initially, Manak only released vinyl, but then, in the wake of the Internet boom, also released CDs. The former better known artists became Madlib , MF Doom and J Dilla .

Founder Peanut Butter Wolf sees his label and the artists under contract as a kind of alternative to the big major labels . Instead of relying on mass compatibility, Manak only signs artists who he likes or in whom he sees potential. Therefore, the label boss gives his artists all musical freedom. The best example of this is the “Beat Kondukta” series by Madlib , in which, among other things, he deals musically with the film music of Indian Hindi films . All artists are also involved in terms of promotion. The label philosophy also includes the release of instrumental LPs for live concerts and DJ sets.

Well-known artists are Madlib , Dudley Perkins , Georgia Anne Muldrow and Oh No . Jay Dee, aka J Dilla, also released the last two albums before his death, Ruff Draft and Donuts , on Stones Throw. With the latter album, Manak took the unorthodox way to release the album in 2013 as a box of 45 (several 7 '' singles in one box), a format that was common in US jukeboxes . In recent years it was mainly the artist Aloe Blacc who sold the most and thus ensured the continued existence of the label.

documentary

About Crowdfunding one was documentary called Our Vinyl Weighs a Ton funded, dedicated to the history of the label. The documentary was initially shown at various film festivals in 2013 before being released on DVD in May 2014. The film can now also be viewed in the media library of the online video service “Red Bull TV”.
