Bounded to the south by Haverstraw , to the east by the Hudson River and to the west by the Palisades Interstate Parkway , Stony Point is 40 miles north of central New York City .
history
Stony Point got its name because of the stones ( stones ) and rocky outcrops along the coastline along the Hudson River and was founded on 20 March. 1865 Before that, the place was also known by the names Antioch , Flora Falls , North Haverstraw , Knight's Corners, and Caldwell's Landing . The first settlers bought some tracts of land from the Algonquin Indians.
In the area of what is now Stony Point, the Battle of Stony Point took place on July 15, 1779 during the American War of Independence , when American infantrymen, commanded by Anthony Wayne , attacked and captured a fortified British position at night.
Today the place is in demand as a residential area to the nearby metropolis New York, houses some medium-sized industrial companies and is active in tourism.
