description

This species is an annual herbaceous plant ( therophyte ) that grows up to 40 cm high . She is completely bald. The leaves are cut 2 to 3 times pinnately. The lower ones have egg-shaped pinnate sections, the upper narrow linear end sections. The umbels have 3 to 8 small cones, each of which has 7 to 9 flowers. They have rayed, hermaphrodite marginal flowers with 2 to 4 mm long, white petals. The partial fruit is spherical, 3 to 3.5 mm in diameter and has a fine black surface without ridges connected like a network.

It blooms in the second half of June and July.

The chromosome number of the species is 2n = 20.

Location claims and distribution

Bifora radians grows on calcareous, basic, often skeletal , moderately dry soils. It occurs mainly in grain fields. It is a caucalidion association character in Central Europe.

The radial hollow seed occurs in Central and Southern Europe and Asia Minor up to Iran . Its distribution area includes Spain, France, Italy, Sicily, Austria, Slovenia, Albania, Serbia, Croatia, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Montenegro, Macedonia, Bulgaria, Romania, Ukraine, Turkey, Iran, Armenia, Georgia, Azerbaijan and Russia. In Germany and the Czech Republic he is a neophyte. In Austria it occurs scattered, in Switzerland it is rare and only introduced now and then.

Bifora radians occur in Germany scattered and rarely in the central and southern part of the area.

The species obviously only immigrated to Central Europe in historical times. The first observations from Germany date from around 1880.
