Stranorlar
Stranorlar ( Irish : Srath an Urláir ) is a city in County Donegal in the north-west of the Republic of Ireland .
Stranorlar is located in the eastern part of the county directly across from Ballybofey , with which it forms the so-called Twin Towns nationwide . Stranorlar is located in the Finn Valley on the north, Ballybofey on the south bank of the River Finn . Ballybofey-Stranorlar had a total of 4852 inhabitants at the 2016 census .
Stranorlar is on the N15 from Sligo to Derry City , roughly halfway between Donegal Town in the south-west and Lifford , the capital of the county, and the larger Northern Irish Strabane in the east. The N56 connects Stranorlar with Letterkenny , the county's largest city, just a few miles away . As the N56 is a circular route through the entire county, many Donegal tourists pass through Stranorlar.
For nearly 100 years, Stranorlar was the center of the railway system in County Donegal; the local train station opened in 1863, but closed and demolished in 1960. In its place, a bus depot was built for Bus Éireann , which is still the main depot of Bus Éireann in County Donegal. To celebrate the turn of the millennium , the old station clock was restored and placed in a newly built clock tower at the site of the old station entrance.
The founder of the Home Rule League , Isaac Butt (1813–1879), is buried in the grave field of the old Church of Ireland in Stranorlar.
