The scientific name tazetta (Italian, "little cup") refers to the shape of the side crown.

description

Ostrich daffodils are perennial herbaceous plants that develop bulbs as persistent organs, sometimes with contractile roots. They reach heights of up to 30 cm. Unlike other species, it is not frost-resistant.

The flowers are white and have an occasionally colored corolla in the middle. This species is one of the daffodils, in which the flowers are not individually on an inflorescence stem, but from December to March it has up to five flowers on a golden inflorescence (hence its name).

distribution

The ostrich daffodil is native to the Mediterranean region ( southern Europe and North Africa ). This makes it the most southern type of daffodil. Wild populations are also found in Iran and Kashmir . However, at least in Kashmir, these must be seen as introduced.

The type of daffodil, known as Manousakia (Μανουσάκια) in Greece, has a special meaning as a winter bloomer in poems and song texts of the country. From the end of December, the wild daffodils, considered to be the forerunner of spring, are collected and also sold at markets.

Multiplication

The bouquet daffodil reproduces vegetatively with brood onions .

use

The bouquet daffodil is less important as a cut flower than the yellow or white daffodil . However, it is one of the earliest cultivated and cultivated daffodils. Due to their flowering time, their varieties can occasionally be found in stores as Christmas tazettes as early as December . The biblical " Rose of Sharon " could be a bouquet of daffodils.
