chronology
Different Stronger Alive

Stronger is the second album by Belgian singer Kate Ryan and was first released on March 27, 2004 in Belgium. It could no longer follow the great success of its predecessor Different , in Belgium the album was placed at number 22 in the album charts.

History of origin

After the great international successes of the singles Désenchantée and Libertine from the album Different in 2003, work on the follow-up album began towards the end of the year. On January 22, 2004, the pre-single Only If I was released on vinyl in Belgium , then on CD in February, and the album was released on March 27, 2004.

music

From a stylistic point of view, the second album doesn't differ much from the previous one. The majority is made up of dance tracks again, but this time, in addition to two more poppy songs, there are two ballads instead of one, as in the previous version, Different ( The Rain and Goodbye ). There is also another song with an English and a French version ( The Promise You Made - La Promesse ). Just like with Different , the frequent use of the "you salutation" is striking again with the lyrics, after which one can assign most of the songs to topics like love and the like ( We Belong Together , I Like the Way , Goodbye , ...).

reception

successes

In terms of the charts, you noticed a lot of difference to the previous releases. Already the single Only If I could no longer build on the previous successes and did not make it into the top 10 of the single charts with 16th place as the best placement in Belgium. The album Stronger also lagged far behind the successes of Different at number 22 in the Flemish charts . Only in Germany did it rank better than the previous album.

The second single The Promise You Made / La Promesse was able to place itself in the top 10 of the Flemish single charts and also made it into the Walloon charts. The third single Goodbye , a ballad , however, landed at number 30 and was not particularly successful abroad either.

In Poland , the album was awarded a gold record in September 2004 . The first two singles also did better there than in Belgium with tenth ( Only If I ) and fourth ( The Promise You Made / La Promesse ). Only If I had its best chart position with eighth in Spain , The Promise You Made / La Promesse with fourth in Poland and Slovakia .

Reviews

The e-zine Laut.de rated Stronger with one of five possible evaluation points. This gave the album the worst rating given by Laut.de. The melodies are described by the editor Kai Kopp as "cheap" and the beats as " scootersque ".

Rick Anderson, editor of the All Music Guide awarded 3.5 out of 5 stars. He divided the songs into groups, with some as "colorless professional club anthems that are more or less indistinguishable " ([...] offers blandly professional club anthems that are more or less indistinguishable from any others [...]), other songs again certified “mediocre beats with surprisingly elegant melodies and nicely structured arrangements” ([…] takes run-of-the-mill beats and spices them up with surprisingly elegant melodies and nicely textured arrangements. ). He was particularly fond of the two French songs, which is why he recommended the album.
