Working group of student historians

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Student Historian Working Group is an informal association of members of various corporate associations who deal with student history.

Foundation and purpose

The student historians' conference was initiated in the early 1920s by the fraternity members Georg Schmidgall and Fritz Ullmer (Frankonia Heidelberg). They should enable a regular exchange of results and projects from research, literature and archives. The conferences are open to everyone and have been held annually at different locations since 1924. The organization of the German Student History Conference in 1935 was already associated with difficulties, the 1936 Student History Conference got stuck in the planning phase. When the Institute for University Studies in Würzburg was inaugurated in 1939 , another invitation was received without any lectures being planned. It was not until 1954, at the suggestion of Paul Wentzcke and Robert Paschke, that the student historians' conference was revived. The restart took place in Würzburg. Since then, meetings have been held at different locations.

The working group has been sponsored since 1954 by the Hochschulkundliche Vereinigung eV, founded in 1922, and renamed the German Society for University Studies eV (Würzburg) in 1970. Since 2010 there has been no formal sponsorship, but cooperation with the Association for German Student History (GDS), the Convent of German Academic Associations and the Academy of the Cartell Association of German Catholic Student Associations .

The student historians conference is a forum for corporates from all countries, several nations are regularly represented. Until 1935, the conferences took place together with the Austrian student historians who formed the Austrian Association for Student History in 1969 and have organized their own conferences every two years since 1974. The first joint German-Austrian conference took place in Salzburg in 1982 . Since the 1988 conference in Konstanz, there have also been conferences in which the Swiss Association for Student History, founded in 1984, is equally involved. These "international student historians' conferences" take place every four years.
