The Studierendenwerk Trier is an institution under public law (AöR) of the state of Rhineland-Palatinate . Its statutory tasks according to Sections 112–116 HochSchG include "social support, as well as economic and cultural support" for students at the university locations in Trier and Birkenfeld . In 2012, the Studierendenwerk was awarded the Environmental Prize of the State of Rhineland-Palatinate. In 2015, his online communication was honored with the "Digital Transformation Award".

The statutory tasks of the student union include:

Construction and management of canteens and cafeterias

The Studierendenwerk operates three canteens:

  • at the Tarforst site
  • at the Schneidershof site
  • at the Petrisberg site

and six cafeterias:

  • Tarforst location (Bistro A / B, ForU and Café au C)
  • Schneidershof location
  • Petrisberg site
  • Location Irminenfreihof

In 2018, around 700,000 meals were served by all catering establishments.

The animal welfare organization PETA awarded the Tarforst canteen two stars in the “Vegan-friendly canteen” competition in 2014. With "App on the plate" the Studierendenwerk switched to a digital menu and was awarded the "Digital Transformation Award" in 2015.

The Studierendenwerk has also had a burger counter since 2016. The so-called Burgenerator offers the students of Trier University the opportunity to put together an individual burger online. In 2017 and 2018, a total of more than 14,000 unique items were ordered.

Construction and provision of student living space

The Studierendenwerk Trier maintains 1,617 residential units in the following five residential complexes:

Of these, the Martinskloster residential complex is located near the Trier University of Applied Sciences . The other houses are close to the university.

Advice on social, psychological and legal matters

The Studierendenwerk maintains psychosocial counseling at both university locations and arranges initial legal advice from resident lawyers; the consultations are free of charge for students.

Support with loans and grants

To support students in need, the Studierendenwerk offers: free meals, social support, bridging loans, final exam loans and financial support for students with children (“diaper scholarship” or the “start-up set” or the free cafeteria meal for children “Kids-for -free ")

Semester ticket

The semester ticket is part of the social contribution for students at Trier universities. It is valid on all trains (only in 2nd class) and buses in the Trier Region Transport Association (VRT) ; Since March 1, 2020, this includes crossing the border into Luxembourg by trains and VRT buses. The semester ticket is also valid on local trains beyond the VRT on the following routes:

It does not apply in Luxembourg buses that do not belong to the VRT or in buses on the Trier - Hahn airport route.

Culture semester ticket

Since October 2014, the Studierendenwerk has been offering the cultural semester ticket Tue-Wed-Thu. This statutory cultural initiative pursues the goal of Trier students at eight public cultural institutions ( European Art Academy Trier , Office for Culture and Cross-Border Cooperation, Karl-Marx-Haus , Museum am Dom Trier , Rheinisches Landesmuseum Trier , City Museum Simeonstift Trier , Theater Trier and Cloth Factory (Kulturzentrum ) ) Allow free entry Tuesday to Thursday based on remaining tickets. The organs of the Studierendenwerk are the administrative board and the managing director.

The Board of Directors advises and decides on all matters of fundamental importance, in particular on the annual business plan. Other important tasks include passing resolutions on the articles of association and issuing and changing the contribution regulations.

The administrative board of the Studierendenwerk consists of three professors, four students, one representative of public life and the Chancellor of the University of Trier and the University of Trier (alternately) with voting rights . The chairman of the board of directors is Prof. Dr. Matthias Wolz (as of February 2019).

The managing director Andreas Wagner represents the student union externally and manages the day-to-day business.

financing

The Studierendenwerk Trier is essentially financed from three sources:

  • Own income
  • Student social contributions and
  • Subsidies from the state of Rhineland-Palatinate (only for running the canteens).

In 2016, the Studierendenwerk Trier had a financing requirement of more than 13 million euros to cope with its diverse tasks.

In 2018 it was just under 5 million euros.

Own income for 2018 (total: € 8,354,291).
