Sturgeon River is a 177 km long river in the Canadian province of Ontario .
The river originates near Lady Evelyn-Smoothwater Provinicial Park in the Timiskaming District in Ontario. It flows southeast through Sudbury District and Nipissing District before flowing into Lake Nipissing on the north bank . The administrative center of West Nipissing Municipality - Sturgeon Falls - is located on the river, about 3 km north of its mouth. Sections of the upper reaches are protected by the 33.5 km² Sturgeon River Provincial Park .
history
The Hudson's Bay Company operated the fur trading post Sturgeon River House on the river from 1848–1879 . The river was used for log rafting until the middle of the 20th century. The logs were transported to the sawmills on Lake Nipissing.
Hydropower plants
The Crystal Falls hydropower plant is operated by the Ontario Power Generation (OPG). It was completed in 1921 and has an output of 8 MW. It is 10 miles north of Sturgeon Falls.
The Sturgeon Falls hydropower plant has existed since 1902. It is operated by West Nipissing Power Generation . It has 6 Francis turbines with a total output of 7 MW.
