description

The film was originally made for the television station PBS , which aired it in 1983. After that, the film also took part in numerous film festivals. Style Wars looks at the lives of young graffiti writers trying to express themselves through art. The film also shows the opinion of the then New York Mayor Ed Koch , the police, employees of the New York subway and various "people from the street".

The film introduces the one-armed Writer Case, the Writer Skeme and his mother, the infamous Cap, the late graffiti artists Dondi and Shy, the graffiti documentarist (and director of Style Wars) Henry Chalfant, and the breakdancer Crazy Legs . The film gives an insight into the scene at that time and shows how many, both social and ethnic groups, it made up at that time.

In Germany, the documentary was also shown as "U-Bahn Bilder und crazy legs". In the German version, cabaret artist Henning Venske , also known from Sesame Street , acts as voiceover .

The DVD version, which was released later, contains 23 minutes of additional film material, galleries by over 30 artists, as well as additional retrospective interviews with Fab 5 Freddy , Goldie , Guru , DJ Red Alert , Deadly Buda and the photographer Martha Cooper .
