Subrahmanyam Jaishankar (born January 9, 1955 in New Delhi ) is an Indian diplomat who has been Indian Foreign Minister since May 31, 2019 . He is a member of the Bharatiya Janata Party . Since July 5, 2019, he has been a member of the Indian parliament in the Rajya Sabha , where he represents Gujarat .

Life

Jaishankar was born in 1955 to the well-known Indian foreign policy commentator and official Krishnaswamy Subrahmanyam and his wife Sulochana. One of his brothers later became India's Secretary of State for Rural Development. He went to a private school in Delhi and studied at the prestigious St. Stephen's College of the University of Delhi and then at Jawaharlal Nehru University . He holds degrees in political science and international relations .

He began his foreign service career in 1977 for the Indian Foreign Service . From 1979 to 1981 Jaishankar worked as the third secretary and second secretary of the Indian Mission to the Soviet Union in Moscow , where he studied Russian . He then returned to New Delhi, where he worked as special assistant to diplomat Gopalaswami Parthasarathy and as undersecretary in the Department of State for the United States . From 1985 to 1988 he was Secretary of the Indian Embassy in Washington, DC . in the United States.

From 1988 to 1990 he was Secretary of the Embassy in Sri Lanka and political advisor to the Indian peacekeeping force, which was responsible for disarming the parties to the civil war. From 1990 to 1993 he was counselor at the Indian representation in Budapest . After his return to New Delhi he was Director for Eastern Europe in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs as well as press officer and speechwriter for the then Indian President Shankar Dayal Sharma . From 1996 to 2000 Jaishankar was Deputy Head of Mission at the Indian Embassy in Tokyo , Japan . In 2001 he became Indian Ambassador to the Czech Republic and held this office until January 2004.

He then worked for the Indian Foreign Office and was involved in negotiating the 2005 United States-India Civil Nuclear Agreement, which improved relations between the two countries. Jaishankar was India's High Commissioner in Singapore from 2007 to 2009 . He then served as the Ambassador of India to the People's Republic of China (2009 to 2013) and the United States (2013 to 2015). On January 29, 2015, he was appointed Foreign Secretary of India. On May 31, 2019, he was promoted to foreign minister, succeeding Sushma Swaraj after he had announced his retirement in 2018.

Personal

Jaishankar is married to Kyoko Jaishankar, who is of Japanese descent. You have three children.

He has been the holder of the Padma Shri since 2019 .

criticism

He is considered the architect of a blockade in the neighboring state of Nepal in September 2015. During this time, the country was only just recovering from a devastating earthquake . The motive is an attempt to influence the domestic politics of the neighboring country, which does not have access to the sea.
