Ustādh Sultan Khan (born April 15, 1940 near Jaipur ; † November 27, 2011 in Mumbai , Maharashtra ) was an Indian sarang player and singer .

Life

Khan was the student of his father Gulab Khan, a sarangi master. He first appeared at the All-India Conference at the age of eleven. In 1974, like Ravi Shankar, he was involved in George Harrison's Dark Horse World Tour . He has won numerous prizes, such as the Sangeet Natak Academy Award twice , but also the Gold Medalist Award of Maharashtra and the American Academy of Artists Award 1998. He often appeared as the accompanist of Zakir Hussain , with whom he has also recorded several albums. He was also a member of the fusion group Tabla Beat Science , in which he played with Zakir Hussain and Bill Laswell , and worked with Nana Simopoulos , Jonas Hellborg and Fazal Qureshi . Sultan Khan was involved in the production of the music for several Indian films.

Khan was the teacher of Sukshinder Shinda and Ram Gopal Varma .
