The Sulzwiesengraben is an approximately 2.5 km long stream on the eastern edge of the Palatinate Forest in the district of the independent Palatinate town of Neustadt an der Weinstrasse ( Rhineland-Palatinate ). In Neustadt it flows into the Floßbach from the left .

course

The stream rises at about 276  m above sea level. NHN height 400 m southeast of the Weinbiet summit ( 554  m ) at the upper end of the Meisental , which lies in the eastern edge of the Haardt mountains of the Palatinate Forest.

The stream flows with a steep gradient in a south-easterly direction for a good 2 km through this valley and the south of the Haardt district . On the slope north of the city center, the direction of travel changes to south for the last 300 m. In this area the stream is partially canalized and quickly falls from about 180  m to only about 135  m . At the foot of the slope it reaches the wide floodplain of the Speyerbach, which flows much more slowly from west to east, and first crosses under Maximilianstrasse ( Bundesstrasse 38 ), then Wallgasse.

20 m south of Wallgasse , the Sulzwiesengraben flows into the Floßbach at around 132  m above sea level. This branches off to the left 600 m above the Casimirianum from the Speyerbach and is led underground for the first 500 m along the B 38, only then does it run again on the surface - until it flows back into the Speyerbach.

history

The name Sulzwiesengraben indicates that the brook on the Mittellauf once ran through boggy meadows that are still called Sulzwiesen today .

At the beginning, the water between Wallgasse and Konrad-Adenauer-Straße flowed from the left into the Speyerbach itself. When its left junction Floßbach was created, 200 of the last 250 m of the Sulzwiesengraben lower course were included in this. At the former left bend of the Sulzwiesengraben is now its mouth. From here to the east, the floodplain of Floßbach and Speyerbach was renatured as the Wallgasse green corridor in 2010 .

The old mouth of the Sulzwiesengraben between Wallgasse ( ) and Konrad-Adenauer-Straße ( ) is today a 50 m long overflow from the Floßbach to the southeast to the Speyerbach, only flooded when the water level is high.
