Floßbach immediately after separating from the Speyerbach

The Floßbach does not have its own source , but separates in Neustadt an der Weinstrasse at 137  m above sea level. NHN on the western edge of the city center from Speyerbach to the left. The junction, as indicated by the names of the Klausenbrücke bridge there and the Klausengasse leading over it, was laid out in such a way that the Speyerbach could also be dammed up there for the Trift . Two weirs enabled the backwater into the bridged hermitage ( ), by opening one or the other weir, the Trift was steered straight ahead into the Speyerbach or to the left into the Floßbach.

The latter initially flows in a north-north-easterly direction along the federal highway 38 , which is first called Ludwigstraße and then - after the path that once ran next to the stream - Bachgängel. The stream is still open for the first 40 m, then it largely disappears underground. He accompanies the stream gängel, which he crosses under at the beginning to the west and then again to the east and with which he also describes a large arc to the east along the northern edge of the city center. The Floßbach also passes the straw market , via which the B 38 continues, underground. Only to the east of where the B 38 bears the name Maximilianstrasse does it come to light again, around 500 m after its origin, behind the development of the road, and now flows southeast. About 100 m further on, its only tributary flows from the left , the 2.5 km long Sulzwiesengraben , which comes from the Neustadt district of Haardt . South of Wallgasse, the Floßbach crosses under Karl-Helfferich-Straße and, flowing on the south side of Wallgasse, approaches the Speyerbach more and more from the left. About 200 m after the mouth of the Sulzwiesengraben there is a 50 m long overflow from the Floßbach to the southeast to the Speyerbach, which is filled when the water level is high.

The Floßbach itself crosses under Wallgasse and continues to flow north parallel to it and the Speyerbach; the distance to this is consistently around 50 m. The two bodies of water are now moving north-east through the Wallgasse green corridor, which was renatured in 2010 , where the Speyerbach was brought back to the surface, and behind Wiesenstrasse they reach the Winzingen district . There you pass the festival meadow, which offers space for open-air events on a good three hectares in addition to a large parking lot, and cross under Winzinger Straße.

Shortly afterwards, the Floßbach flows into the Speyerbach from the left at a height of 133  m . 200 m east of the estuary on the northeastern edge of Winzingen in today's residential area "Böbig", the Rehbach with a third of the amount of water from the Speyerbach has been diverted to the left since the late Middle Ages . The branching system made of sandstone is called Winzinger Wassergescheid .

history

After the Floßbach had once branched off from the Speyerbach, it was initially open along its entire length. It flowed for the first 500 m north-west of the city center along the outside of the city wall and only entered the residential area shortly before the straw market. First and foremost, it served as a transport route for goods from what was then the west of the inner city to the north, especially to the straw market. On the southern edge, he also supplied this with service water and also removed sewage and rubbish. In 1862 the Floßbach in the straw market area was partially vaulted and the market square was paved. Immediately behind the straw market, at the western entrance to Wallgasse, the name of which developed from Walkgasse , stood a copper hammer , the water wheel of which was driven by the raft stream . It was later converted into a paper mill .

When the Floßbach was created, part of the Sulzwiesengraben lower course was integrated into the Floßbach and the mouth of the Sulzwiesengraben was moved backwards by around 250 m - away from the Speyerbach. That is why the Sulzwiesengraben has been flowing into the Floßbach ever since. The old estuary of the Sulzwiesengraben between Wallgasse ( ) and Konrad-Adenauer-Straße ( ) is now the 50 m long overflow from the Floßbach to the Speyerbach, mentioned in the section Course , which is only flooded when the water level is high.

Towards the end of the 1960s, the city of Neustadt began implementing its plan to make the open city waters of Speyerbach and Floßbach disappear under the surface; the Speyerbach should even be completely drained and its water drained over the raft brook. The canalization was carried out in the 1970s, but the drainage of the Speyerbach was not possible for reasons of flood protection . With the section curve described renaturation of both water channeling 2010 partially - undo - from the Wallgasse.

At the end of 2012 it was found that Nutrias had settled in the renatured green corridor and from there also in the other Neustadt brook areas. These rodents , which originate from South America , can weigh up to 10 kg and prefer to dig their burrows in the banks of watercourses.
