The Sumpfsee is an elongated lake and is located in the municipality of Rechlin in the south of the Mecklenburg Lake District, about seven kilometers northwest of Mirow in southeast Mecklenburg. In the west and south the lake borders on the municipality of Lärz .
Coming from the north, from the Kleine Müritz , the Mirower Canal leads through the lake on its western edge. Both are part of the 32 kilometer-long federal waterway Müritz-Havel waterway of waterway Class I, for the waterway and shipping authority in Eberswalde is responsible. Through this canal and the Bolter Canal, which runs 7 kilometers to the north, as well as chains of lakes connected to it, the Havel is fed from the Müritz, which has artificially become a bifurcating body of water. Most of the time, the water should flow off towards the Havel due to the difference in altitude. The direction of flow should only be reversed when the Mirow lock is closed.
The lake has an approximate length of 1200 meters and an approximate width of 270 meters. In the northern part it is a little wider. Here is a small wooded island.
To the east of the lake is the Rechlin-Lärz airfield and to the north of the lake is the federal highway 198 .
