Super Columbine Massacre RPG! , also SCMRPG! is a computer role-playing game , which the School massacre discussed. The game was created by Daniel Ledonne using the RPG Maker development program and released as freeware in 2005 .

Plot and game play

The plot is roughly divided into two sections. The beginning describes the massacre from the point of view of the two perpetrators, if this became known through media and police reports. The second part deals with a fictional incident in hell that becomes more and more absurd and surreal towards the end. Noteworthy is the source work with which the author tries to recreate the crime, as reporter Clive Thompson notes on the Wired website . For example, the antidepressants of an offender, various media they consumed, witness statements about their dialogues and video recordings made by the perpetrators are incorporated into the game.

The first part of the plot is very linear at the beginning. The preparation up to the failed detonation of the explosive devices placed by the perpetrators is described meticulously. The following section deals with the rampage itself. It is up to the player to decide to end the first part immediately by suicide of the characters or to kill any number of NPCs beforehand . After the suicide, the game describes the entry of the two protagonists into hell. There they fight against characters from the first person shooter Doom , which, according to many press reports, was one of the perpetrators' favorite games. Later an encounter with various celebrities and fictional characters is described there, which ends in a fight against Satan .

Presentation and technology

Daniel Ledonne, the developer of the game

By using the RPG maker, the game bears strong similarities to console role-playing games of the late 1980s and early 1990s, such as corresponding parts of the Final Fantasy series. The game is kept in a few colors and low resolution and generally has a comic style from a bird's eye view . According to an article in the Washington Post , the game is “not especially bloody”. In addition, digitized material captured by video cameras of the crime and archive material from various media reports about the crime is used in sequences of the game. From time to time, song texts are also quoted that were later brought into connection with the perpetrators' musical taste.

The course of the game is also comparable to the games mentioned above. The player moves the characters around the simulated school and provokes turn-based battles through contact with NPCs. As usual in the genre, different attacks can then be selected or objects can be used. After each fight, the characters receive experience points and thus increase in level . A rudimentary equipment system is also included in the game. So it is possible for the player to equip the protagonists with the first person shooter Doom or a Marilyn Manson CD in order to increase their skills. The degree of difficulty in the first part is kept moderate, as it is possible at any time to fill up the hit points and ammunition in the school parking lot . In addition, unlike the characters, the NPCs cannot rise in level.

criticism

Reactions about the game range from disgusting, as cited by Brian Rohrboug (whose son was shot in the rampage), to praise. Ian Bogost , a professor at Georgia Tech University, considers “Super Columbine Massacre RPG” to be “brave and sophisticated”. Kind of a game that more would be needed. Brent Bozell III, a well-known conservative activist in the USA, sharply attacked Bogost for these remarks, calling him an idiot. In the same article he also describes the game author as a pervert ("sicko"). Roger Kovacs, who was friends with Rachel Scott , thinks it is reprehensible that the game could kill Rachel over and over again. Richard Castaldo, on the other hand, who has been paralyzed from the waist down since the massacre, describes that parts of the game were tough for him, but that he also appreciates the game in a certain way. Der Spiegel explains the controversy over SCMRPG! in that it is a “satirical reckoning with the murderers and their twisted worldview”, which “acts like sheer cynicism on non-players”.

At the Slamdance Film Festival 2007, at which a computer game prize is awarded annually in the Slamdance Guerilla Games Competition , Super Columbine Massacre RPG! nominated. However, participation in the game was denied in January 2007, whereupon six of the remaining 14 finalists also withdrew from the competition. Because of these incidents, the 2007 Games Award was not given.

The American computer magazine PC World calls it SCMRPG! as number two of the ten worst games of all time.

On September 13, 2006, a Canadian Kimveer Gill killed one person and injured 19 others at Dawson College, Westmount . After the fact, the perpetrator shot himself. According to a report from the AP , SCMRPG! was one of the games Gill mentioned on his website. The world reported that the "perpetrator loved the computer game" Super Columbine Massacre "more than anything".
