Susan Eggers

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Susan Jane Eggers (* 1943 ) is an American computer engineer .

Life

Eggers graduated from Connecticut College with a bachelor's degree in economics in 1965 . She worked in this field for 18 years before studying computer science at the University of California, Berkeley in 1983 , where she received her PhD in computer science with Randy Katz in 1989 (dissertation: Simulation Analysis of Data Sharing in Shared Memory Multiprocessors ). Then she was Professor of Computer Science at the University of Washington until retirement .

It deals with computer architecture and compiler construction . In the late 1980s, they made significant contributions to the coherence (cache coherency) of cache -Save in multiprocessors share-memory, that is the coordination of various in part from a plurality of processors distributed shared storing data in multi-processor systems. With Hank Levy , she developed Simultaneous Multithreading (SMT) in the 1990s , one of the most important developments in computer architecture in recent decades. That was the basis for the hardware implementation of multithreading in the mainstream of commercially successful architectures, for example at Intel (hyperthreading), but also at Sun Microsystems and IBM . In 2010 the technology received the test of time award from the International Symposium on Computer Architecture (ISCA) of the IEEE Computer Society. Eggers himself was involved in the transfer of SMT technology to commercial computers at IBM, Fujitsu, MemoryLogix and Sun Microsystems.

She is a Fellow of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) (2003) and the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM, 2002), of which she was Athena Lecturer in 2009. In 2006 she became a Fellow of the National Academy of Engineering and the American Association for the Advancement of Science and in 2013 a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences .

Awards

In 1990 she received a Presidential Young Investigator Award from the National Science Foundation . In 2018 she was the first woman to receive the Eckert-Mauchly Award for computer architecture. She received it for outstanding contributions to simultaneous multithreading in the computer architecture of processors and distribution and coherence in multiprocessors (laudation).
